It took me an embarrassing long time to learn how to apply my own makeup, and it was only until I went to a professional and asked her to teach me that I finally mastered applying my own make up. Seriously! Many makeup professionals will give you lessons. It’s one of my favorite things to do!
Over the years I have tried a variety of products at a variety of price points, and I have finally picked out some of my favorite base products. Lip color changes, which eye shadows I use change, but I have compiled a collection of my favorite foundation, brushes, blush, mascara, and even lip primer and brow definer (because who really has perfect eye brows.
I have become addicted to this stuff. It seriously goes on so smoothly and really looks like you are wearing nothing. I get so many compliments from it. It comes in an aerosol can (sorry environment), and the directions say spray it directly on your face, but I spray it on my brush instead and then rub it in. I was taught to add it layer by layer depending on my desired level of coverage. It’s also light enough that I can wear it during the summer heat of Charleston. I wear 100-Ivory for reference.
These kind of weird looking makeup brushes that are trending are actually incredible for applying foundation. I walked into my neighborhood makeup store, Cos Bar (there are actually locations nationwide and I love them), and I told them I wanted a full set of Artis brushes, but my makeup guru explained that they are pretty awkward except for applying foundation, and she is absolutely right! I really love them!
I actually get this at Sephora (sorry Megan). One day, several years ago, I walked in, found an associate, and explained that I have never found a blush I like and she immediately grabbed Nars Orgasm. She sat me down and there happened to be two other girls with completely different skin tones than me who were also struggling with blush. She passed the sample around and Orgasm was put on each of us (while we all giggled over the name like middle schoolers). But it was incredible! It looked different on each of us, but equally amazing! I cannot suggest this enough!
I know Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes have a huge following, but I am not one of those. I was interested in a good eyeshadow palette and this one had happened to have just come out and after reading some good reviews, I picked it up. And I love it. It has a variety of colors ranging from a light base color to black, as well as five similar colors with a bit of sparkle for those extra special nights. This thing is incredible!
For mascara I went back to Cos Bar and picked up this mascara. I already have long, thick, dark eye lashes, but I just need a little pop to make them stand out (I know, everyone’s jealous). This has been the perfect mascara. It goes on smoothly with just a few swipes and looks super natural (no spider legs here).
I think everyone needs a bit of help with their eyebrows. Some people have really thin eyebrows, while others just have splotches of thinness. I’m definitely in the latter group. My eyebrows are also two different shapes, and I get them waxed to get them looking similar, but I definitely need this brow definer to fill in the blanks and make them looking normal.
Finally, my lips. I did a tutorial for the holidays about applying red lipstick, and this magical lip primer was definitely included. A brief synopsis, you apply lip liner all over that matches your lipstick, apply this, wait a few minutes for this to set, then put on your lipstick and blot. It is truly incredible stuff.
And that’s it. That’s how I make myself pretty. What are some of your favorite products?
